Bermagui’s Geology

The Bermagui area on the Sapphire Coast of southern New South Wales is a geological wonderland with some of the most fascinating rock formations in Australia. Its coastline reveals ancient rocks that date back over 450 million years, providing a window into Earth's distant past. These rocks were formed deep under the ocean through volcanic activity and layers of sediment accumulating over millions of years.

The striking colors and shapes of the rocks around the Blue Pool, a natural rock pool surrounded by rugged cliffs, tell a story of volcanic eruptions and shifting tectonic plates. Horse Head Rock, a dramatic formation shaped like a horse’s head, has been carved by wind and waves over countless years.

Bermagui’s geology also includes beautiful outcrops of folded and twisted rocks which can be seen all along the coast, showing how powerful forces within the Earth reshaped the land. These rocks often contain fossils of ancient marine creatures.

Did you know?

  1. Horse Head Rock is over 500 million years old, making it one of Australia’s oldest landmarks.

  2. The rocks in Bermagui are part of the Lachlan Fold Belt, a major geological region in Australia.

  3. Fossils found in the area include trilobites and brachiopods, ancient sea creatures.

  4. The volcanic rocks in Bermagui formed from undersea eruptions millions of years ago.
