Mount Dromedary/Gulaga

Long ago, around 94 million years ago, this mountain was an active volcano. Over time, the outer parts of the volcano eroded away, leaving behind the tough volcanic rock that makes up the mountain we see today.

The mountain rises 806 meters above sea level and is covered in lush rainforest. Its smooth, rounded shape is why it was named "Dromedary" after a camel’s hump. To the Yuin people, the mountain is called Gulaga and is a sacred place with deep cultural and spiritual significance.

Gulaga is made of a special type of rock called granite, formed from magma that cooled slowly deep underground. As you hike the trails, you see huge boulders and interesting rock formations scattered throughout the forest.

Did you know?

  1. Mount Dromedary was once much taller when it was an active volcano!

  2. The granite rocks on Gulaga are over 90 million years old.

  3. The mountain’s smooth shape is the result of millions of years of erosion.

  4. The nearby Glasshouse Rocks and Pillow Lava at Narooma were formed by the same volcanic activity.
