Hanging Rock, Victoria

An adventure to the Hanging Rock Reserve in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria with Society members Nell, Dom, Dan, Tim, Lenny, Isley, Bella, Archie, Hamy and Pippa.

Less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne took us to the Hanging Rock Reserve. After checking out the Visitor’s Centre we started our climb to the summit of the Hanging Rock. An ancient volcanic feature, approximately six million years old, the summit sits 718 metres above sea level and was a fair hike. Amazing twisted rock formations were all around us, and it did not take long before the formed track had been left behind and we were climbing and rock scrambling around to discover the best views and secret corners of the site. This included Pippa, showing every indication of continuing the proud family tradition of fearless exploration.

Back at plains level once more, we concluded the adventure in usual style with a fine picnic after which there was a surge of engineering enthusiasm and the creation of a fine bush-style shelter before heading back to Melbourne once again.

En-route to the top of the Hanging Rock outcropping.

Explorer Hamish at the summit of the Hanging Rock!

A well earned feast at journey’s end.
