Hanging Rock

Hanging Rock is in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria, Australia, and was created by a volcano. Approximately 6.25 million years ago, sticky lava erupted from the volcano and slowly cooled into a special type of rock called solvsbergite. Over the following millions of years, wind and rain carved the rock into amazing shapes, leaving behind tall columns, caves, and jagged cliffs.

Exploring Hanging Rock felt like stepping into another world, finding hidden crevices, climbing around giant boulders, and seeing the bushland spread out below. The rock formations are so unique that they’ve inspired legends and stories, like the famous Picnic at Hanging Rock.

  2. The tallest rock columns are over 30 meters high.

  3. Hanging Rock is one of only a few places in the world with solvsbergite rock.

  4. The cracks and caves in the rock were formed by water seeping in and freezing, breaking the rock apart over time.
